Leachate generation is a major problem for municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills and causes significant threat to surface water and groundwater. Leachate can be defined as a liquid that passes through eland fill, and has extracted dissolved and suspended matter from it. 

Landfill leachate is a highly polluted liquid generated when water percolates through solid waste, extracting a complex mixture of organic and inorganic compounds. Its composition varies significantly based on the landfill's age and waste type, but it generally contains high levels of organic matter, ammonia, heavy metals, and other toxic substances, posing a serious threat to soil and water bodies if released untreated. Therefore, a robust, multi-stage treatment process is essential for environmental protection.

Typically, a comprehensive leachate treatment system is comprised of four key stages: Pre-Treatment, Biological Treatment, Membrane Filtration, and Advanced Treatment.

Technologies for landfill leachate treatment include biological treatment , physical/chemical treatment and “emerging” technologies such as reverse osmosis (RO) and evaporation. … Physical-chemical treatment methods include oxidation, coagulation /flocculation, activated carbon, stripping, evaporation, filtration and RO.
