  • What’s the essentially 3 operations of MBR System
What’s the essentially 3 operations of MBR System
    Sep 22, 2026
What’s the essentially 3 operations of MBR System   MBR System Operating Parameters    There are essentially 3 main operations of a membrane bioreactor (MBR) system during wastewater treatment. They are as follows:   Membrane permeability daily maintenance Microbiology maintenance and proper operation Membrane filtration and sludge transfer   Of these, maintaining membrane permeability is one of the most significant factors affecting the overall performance and stable operation of an MBR wastewater treatment plant.   Operation Purpose Key Indicator Biological treatment Degrade pollutants MLSS, DO, SRT Membrane filtration Produce treated water Flux, TMP Aeration/scouring Supply O₂ + control fouling Air flow, DO Backwash/cleaning Restore permeability TMP recovery, permeability   Membrane Premeability Daily Maintenance     The daily maintenance of MBR membrane permeability includes the following:   a) MBR cleaning: Both physical cleaning, such as relaxation and clean-water backwash, and membrane air scouring are important for maintaining membrane performance. For example, a relaxation time can be designed as 7 minutes of working and 1 minute of relaxation. During air scouring, coarse bubbles rise along the membrane surface and create shear force to remove accumulated sludge and foulants, helping keep the MBR membrane clean.   b) Chemical cleaning – CEB (Chemically Enhanced Backwash):** Backwashing with chemical dosing through the pipeline helps remove foulants that cannot be effectively removed by physical cleaning alone.   c) Chemical cleaning – CIP (Clean-In-Place): CIP is a recovery cleaning procedure for the MBR membrane modules. The membranes are cleaned in the tank using chemicals and aeration to help restore membrane permeability. Microbiology Maintenance and Proper Operation   Biological treatment, or biodegradation, is an essential part of MBR wastewater treatment. Maintaining healthy activated sludge growth in the biological system is very important for stable operation.   The activated sludge in the bioreactor consumes organic matter, nitrogen, and phosphorus. This is the “bioreactor” half of an MBR system. Proper MLSS, DO, SRT, and nutrient balance should be maintained so that the microorganisms can perform their treatment functions effectively.   For typical MBR operation, the MLSS can be maintained at around 6000–8000 mg/L, with DO generally around 1.5–3 mg/L, together with appropriate SRT and nutrient balance.   How to operate the MBR System for Wastewater Treatment and set the running Parameters Membrane Filtration and Sludge Transfer   The MBR membrane modules physically separate treated water from biomass and suspended solids, replacing the secondary clarifier used in a conventional activated sludge plant. This process is driven by a suction pump or gravity head, and its performance is mainly tracked by TMP (transmembrane pressure) and flux.   Discharging sludge from the MBR tank is a routine but critical operation. Unlike conventional systems, MBR systems operate at relatively high MLSS concentrations, so sludge must be periodically wasted to maintain the appropriate biomass concentration and help prevent membrane fouling.   If the MLSS increases above approximately 8000 mg/L, the membrane can become more susceptible to fouling and clogging, making proper sludge management important for stable MBR operation. Hinada is ready to discuss your wastewater treatment needs, MBR membrane selection, system design, or maintenance requirements. Our technical team is here to help. • What’s the difference between CEB and CIP in MBR System
What’s the difference between CEB and CIP in MBR System
    Sep 21, 2026
CEB vs. CIP Cleaning of MBR Membranes: Key Differences and Practical Insights The core difference between CEB (Chemically Enhanced Backwash) and CIP (Clean-In-Place) in MBR systems lies in their purpose and intensity. CEB is a routine, preventive maintenance cleaning method, while CIP is a heavy-duty, recovery cleaning procedure used for more severe membrane fouling.   Here is a detailed comparison: 🎯 Purpose and Strategy CEB (Chemically Enhanced Backwash): This is a preventive maintenance measure for MBR membrane cleaning. Its goal is to control fouling by removing early-stage foulants before they accumulate and become difficult to remove, thereby maintaining stable MBR membrane performance and slowing the rise of Transmembrane Pressure (TMP).   CIP (Clean-In-Place): This is a recovery cleaning procedure. It is used when routine backwashing and CEB can no longer restore membrane performance. Its objective is to restore permeability, significantly reduce TMP, and recover membrane flux after substantial membrane fouling has developed.   ⚙️ Key Operational Differences Feature CEB (Chemically Enhanced Backwash) CIP (Clean-In-Place) Cleaning Type Online (routine, during normal operation) Offline (system shutdown required) Frequency Weekly or every few days. Often triggered when TMP rises 20–30% above the post-CEB baseline. Every 3–6 months. Triggered when TMP exceeds 0.40–0.50 bar, or when TMP fails to recover within 20% of baseline after a CEB. Chemical Concentration Low: Typically 300–500 mg/L (e.g., NaClO). High: Typically 1,000–2,000 mg/L (e.g., NaClO). Contact Time Short: 5–10 minutes. Long: 4–6 hours of soaking. Chemicals Used NaClO (alkaline), Citric Acid (acidic). NaClO, Citric Acid, NaOH (at higher concentrations). Module Removal No (stays in place). Offline: Yes (module may be removed if too much sludge accumulates between MBR modules). Primary Role Prevent fouling (maintain performance). Restore flux (recover performance).   💡 Practical Insights for MBR Membrane Operation CEB as a Routine: CEB is your first line of defense. It combines physical backwashing with a low dose of chemicals to remove loosely attached foulants. Think of it as a regular maintenance cleaning that helps keep the MBR membrane performing consistently.   CIP as a Reset: CIP is the “recovery clean” you perform when membrane performance has degraded beyond what CEB can fix. It involves higher chemical concentrations and longer soaking times to dissolve more stubborn organic and inorganic foulants.   Combining Both: A robust MBR membrane maintenance strategy combines routine CEB with periodic CIP. Relying solely on one or the other is not optimal. Membrane performance, rather than a fixed calendar alone, should help determine when to perform each cleaning type. CIP and CEB cleaning of MBR Membrane   In summary, CEB is for control, while CIP is for recovery. You use CEB frequently to prevent fouling from building up, and you use CIP occasionally to restore MBR membrane performance when fouling has already become severe.   If you’d like more details on a specific aspect, such as the step-by-step procedure for MBR membrane CIP cleaning or chemical selection for different types of fouling, feel free to contact Hinada.

  • How a Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) System Works for Wastewater
How a Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) System Works for Wastewater
    Sep 14, 2026
How a Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) System Works for Wastewater First and foremost, a Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) system is a highly efficient water clarification technology. Its primary purpose is to separate suspended solids (TSS), fats, oils, grease (FOG), and other low-density particles from a liquid stream.   In essence, a DAF system is an important part of many Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) pretreatment stages. It tackles problematic contaminants such as high TSS levels and fats, oils, and grease (FOG) at an early stage. By removing these pollutants early, a DAF system can significantly reduce the load on downstream biological treatment processes, help optimize chemical consumption, and improve the overall performance of the wastewater treatment process. The DAF process can be broken down into four essential stages: ⚙️ 1. Chemical Coagulation and Flocculation (Pretreatment) Before the wastewater enters the main DAF tank, coagulants such as aluminum or iron salts and flocculants such as polyelectrolytes are typically added. These chemicals neutralize electrical charges and cause fine suspended particles and colloidal matter to bind together, forming larger, fluffy agglomerates called “flocs.” This step is crucial because larger flocs are much easier for the microbubbles to attach to during the flotation process. 💨 2. Dissolution and Release of Air (Bubble Generation) This is the heart of the DAF system — creating a large number of extremely fine bubbles. Dissolution (Pressurization) A portion of the clarified effluent or clean water is diverted into a pressure vessel called the saturation tank or air-dissolving tube. Compressed air is injected into this stream under pressure, typically around 4–6 bar. At this elevated pressure, a significant amount of air dissolves into the water, forming a pressurized, air-rich solution. Release (Depressurization) The pressurized, air-rich water is then discharged through special pressure-release nozzles into the main DAF flotation tank, which is normally at atmospheric pressure. The sudden pressure drop causes the dissolved air to come out of solution and form a large number of microscopic bubbles, typically around 20–40 micrometres in diameter. These microbubbles provide the flotation force required for efficient solid-liquid separation.   ⬆️ 3. Bubble Attachment and Flotation (Separation) In the contact zone of the DAF tank, the released microbubbles mix with the chemically pretreated wastewater. The microbubbles attach to the surfaces of flocs, oil droplets, and other suspended particles. Once attached, the overall density of the bubble-particle agglomerates becomes lower than that of water, causing them to rise to the surface under buoyancy. This creates a floating layer of sludge, commonly called the “float” or “scum,” on the surface of the DAF tank. At the same time, the clarified water remains below the floating layer and moves toward the treated-water collection area.   🧹 4. Sludge Skimming and Collection (Final Clarification) Sludge Skimming The accumulated floating sludge layer is continuously or intermittently removed from the surface by chain-driven or spiral skimmers. The collected sludge is directed into a sludge trough and can then be sent for further sludge dewatering, treatment, or disposal, depending on the project requirements. Clear Effluent Withdrawal The clarified water remains in the lower portion of the flotation tank. It is collected uniformly through a system of collection pipes or launders and discharged from the DAF unit. Depending on the overall treatment process, the clarified effluent can then proceed to biological treatment, MBR, UF, RO, or other downstream treatment processes, or be reused when the required water quality is achieved. 💡 Key Advantages and Typical Applications DAF is especially effective for contaminants whose density is close to or less than that of water, including: Fats, oils, and grease (FOG) Suspended and colloidal solids Algae and fibers Emulsified oils Other low-density particles With appropriate chemical conditioning and proper system design, DAF can achieve high removal efficiency. Actual performance depends on wastewater characteristics, chemical dosage, hydraulic loading, air-to-solids ratio, and overall process design. Common Applications Include: Industrial wastewater – food processing, dairy, meat processing, pulp and paper, petrochemical, and metal finishing industries. Municipal wastewater – as a primary treatment step or for sludge thickening. Drinking water treatment – for removing algae, turbidity, and other suspended particles. Oil-water separation – for applications such as refinery and marine wastewater treatment. In summary, a Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) system combines chemical conditioning, pressure-dissolved air, and physical flotation to provide a robust and widely adaptable solution for solid-liquid separation in wastewater treatment. The effectiveness of DAF makes it an important pretreatment technology for many industrial wastewater treatment applications, particularly where high levels of TSS, oil, grease, and floating or colloidal solids need to be removed before downstream treatment. • From Sand Filtration to Automated UF: Upgrading a 4,300 m³/day Water Treatment System
From Sand Filtration to Automated UF: Upgrading a 4,300 m³/day Water Treatment System
    Aug 21, 2026
From Sand Filtration to Automated UF: Upgrading a 4,300 m³/day Water Treatment System How an existing water treatment system was upgraded with an automated ultrafiltration solution to achieve more stable water quality and a more compact operation.   When Traditional Filtration Is No Longer Enough Caption :  Project site at a Biosafety Industrial ParkFor large residential water treatment systems, stable water quality is just as important as treatment capacity.   In this project, the existing treatment process relied mainly on conventional filtration. However, water quality fluctuations and algae-related contamination created challenges for stable downstream operation.   Instead of simply adding another conventional filtration stage, the project required a more reliable and automated filtration solution. The goal was clear: improve filtration performance while making the system easier to operate and manage. The Upgrade: From Conventional Filtration to UFCaption :  Existing sand and carbon filtration equipment at the project site Hinada upgraded the existing treatment process with an Ultrafiltration (UF) membrane system. The UF system uses hollow fiber membranes with micropores to physically separate suspended solids, colloids, bacteria and other contaminants from the feed water. Compared with conventional filtration, UF provides a more consistent physical barrier and produces a more stable filtrate for downstream treatment. The upgraded system was designed around three key requirements: More stable water quality Higher level of automation Better use of available space This made UF a practical choice for upgrading the existing treatment system without relying solely on conventional filtration.       Caption :  Integrated UF equipment designed for reliable and automated operation A More Compact and Automated UF System   One of the key considerations was not only treatment performance, but also how the new system would operate in the existing facility.   Hinada designed the UF system with an integrated skid-mounted configuration, combining membrane modules, piping, valves, instruments and control components into a compact arrangement.   The system also incorporates PLC-based automatic control, reducing the need for frequent manual intervention and making daily operation easier for the plant team.   The optimized layout reduced the required floor space by approximately 30%, while maintaining the required treatment capacity.   How the UF System Works   The core of the system is the PVDF hollow fiber UF membrane.Caption :  Hollow fiber ultrafiltration membranes use fine pores to separate contaminants from water   Feed water enters the membrane modules under pressure. Water passes through the microscopic membrane pores, while larger suspended particles, colloids and microorganisms are retained. The overall process integrates: Pre-filtration → UF Membrane Filtration → Automatic Control → Treated Water Caption :  Engineering drawings showing the UF system layout and process design  The system was also integrated with the existing treatment equipment, allowing the upgrade to work as part of the overall water treatment process rather than as an isolated unit. Designed for Large-Scale Residential Water Supply The upgraded system was designed to support water treatment for a residential community serving more than 20,000 residents. Key project parameters include: These parameters demonstrate that the project was not simply a membrane replacement, but a system-level upgrade focused on reliability, automation and space efficiency. The Result: More Reliable Filtration, Easier Operation By replacing the limitations of conventional filtration with an automated UF membrane process, the upgraded system provides a more consistent filtration barrier and better control of treated water quality. The project demonstrates an important approach for existing water treatment plants: When conventional filtration can no longer provide the stability required, upgrading the filtration stage can be more effective than simply expanding the existing process. For facilities facing similar challenges, an appropriately designed UF system upgrade can improve filtration performance while also reducing operational complexity and equipment footprint.
